DRA Producer Chris Davis Shares Some Words of Wisdom

Typically I have something unique and descriptive to say about everyone I interview for the video section, but Christopher Davis (producer of Dancer’s Responding to AIDS) needs something a bit more spectacular. So here’s my anecdote: When I stepped off the elevator on the 13th floor, Chris, only a few steps ahead of me, turned around and gave me the biggest hug (and not the New York City “it’s good to see you,” formality hug, a genuine, heart-felt, empowering embrace). Before viewing this video clip, I have to elaborate on what an amazing energy that Chris exudes; the kind of effervescence that made me forget about what a rough day I was having and the kind of luster that one needs to champion such an important charity. Normally I won’t let these montages exceed 5 minutes, but when you’re face to face and having a REAL conversation with one of the most influential producers in the dancer world, you don’t cut the camera off. I’m telling you now, watch all 10 minutes of this refreshingly HONEST conversation with a truly amazing person, who vets an even more amazing cause. (And when you’re done watching this video, please visit DRA’s website and find out how you can support the fight against AIDS.)

1. What is the first creative moment you remember?

Taking piano lessons as a child.

2. Where did you grow up and how did you end up where you are now?

Lake Charles, Louisiana.  In college I was a nationally ranked cheerleader. I tore my knee (ACL) tumbling during a football game.  Once I completed surgery and rehab, a friend suggested I come to a dance class with her. I was hooked! My teacher entered me in the Mr. Dance of Texas competition… I won. I then came to NYC for the national competition and knew that dance and living in New York was what I wanted to do. I did fairly well in the competition-this was after only studying for a year and a half- and moved here once I completed my college education. I performed in 7 Broadway shows, 3 motion pictures and did some other work as a choreographer. I had a great time as a dancer. I decided to retire about 4 years ago and applied for a job at DRA. The position I wanted opened and I’ve been at DRA for 3 years as Producer.

3. Which performance, song, play, movie, painting or other work of art had the biggest influence on you and why?

As a child, I LOVED watching the “Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson. I dreamed about being a performer and being interviewed by Johnny. My “ah ha” moment occurred when I saw Stephanie Mills performing an excerpt from “The Wiz.” I knew I wanted to do that and fortunately dance came my way in college.

4. What is your ideal creative activity?

Now that I’m retired, I love going to ballet class. When I was dancing on Broadway, ballet wasn’t something I loved, but I did it from time to time to keep myself ready for work. Now, I have no pressure to pay my rent dancing and class is all about getting away from my cell phone. I take class with Kat Wildish. She is the Chelsea Lately of the ballet world.

5. How do you begin your day?

Tuesday and Thursday, I go to the gym and lift weights before heading into the office.

Twice a month I have the chiropractor before heading into the office. Other than that, it’s get up, shower, run out and pick up my bagel and coffee which I then eat at my desk while checking email.

6. Have you ever had to make a choice between work and art? What did you choose, why, and what was the outcome?

I can not recall ever having to make that choice. I have been pretty fortunate with my performing career and always went after the shows and opportunities I wanted. Fortunately I was able to have those moments where I could get away from 8 shows a week and do something fun for friends, like performing in their choreography reel.

7. When you work, do you love the process or the result?

I love the process. I was always the kid that loved doing the research in the library for the paper. I must add that the result of some of our events like the Fire Island Dance Festival is pretty spectacular.
