A little note on love while at the theater:
Valentine’s Day always gets me. Half of the women walk around this city drenched in balloons, flowers and stuffed animals as though they’ve won “Best in Show,” while the other half look at those pretty puppies with a sarcastic chuckle and a secret longing. It’s bizarre. What is it about tacky red balloons and gratuitous amounts of fatty chocolates that makes us feel like we’ve got the best guy in town? I’ve always said that if a man doesn’t have the interest to buy me flowers for no reason, than giving them to me for Valentine’s Day is just an additional kick in the face, “Here honey. I love you so much I bought you flowers on the same day every other man in America does.” Thank you for making me feel so special sweetie.
Now, that’s NOT to say that I don’t EXPECT a sacarin gesture on this obligatory Hallmark holiday, but these momentos have to come with a grander line of thinking. The men that set you apart from the Russell Stover’s chocolates and the cheap looking teddy bears are the ones that you want to keep around. The ones that write you a sentimental and special note on the flowers he sent to your job, or the ones that rush home to cook you a little dinner for a change. Those are the ones that really warm your heart…after all…anyone can order flowers, make a trip to Duane Reade and pick up a red and pink card, and tell you that they love you in the same way thousands of other friends, family and lovers have. In the end, it’s just like The Beatles sang, “All you need is love…” If you TRULY have that, whether it be friend or boyfriend, you’re already ahead of the competition…
